For generations, door knockers have been permanent fixtures—beautiful, perhaps, but unchanging. Sushi Groff, a Pennsylvania-based designer who spent more than twenty years in the architecture and interior design industry saw something everyone else missed: an opportunity to turn functional hardware into something as personal and changeable as the jewelry we wear.
Her creation, Nifty Knockers, is the first patented interchangeable door knocker system made from solid brass. At nearly two pounds per piece, each knocker features a slide-and-lock mechanism that allows homeowners to swap out designs in seconds. No tools required. No commitment to a single look.
“Jewelry for your door,” is how the brand describes it—and the comparison fits. Just as someone might change their earrings to match an outfit or occasion, homeowners can now refresh their entryway for the holidays, the seasons, or simply when they feel like it.
Craftsmanship Meets Modularity
Each piece is forged from heirloom-quality brass, finished with crisp detailing designed to last a lifetime. The debut collection includes three designs: Keen Kitten, Pretty Pineapple, and Adored Amulet. Customers start with an Essential Set—a base unit plus one knocker top—and can build their collection over time.

What makes this interchangeable door hardware system particularly appealing is its flexibility. Additional designs are already in development, with plans for seasonal, holiday, and limited-edition styles. The concept taps into the same collecting impulse that drives people to swap out wreaths or refresh throw pillows—except this time, it’s a piece of functional hardware.
A New Category in Home Décor
Groff’s background in interior design informed every detail. She studied the heritage knockers of Philadelphia’s Society Hill—classic brass pieces with character and weight—and set out to give that tradition a modern twist. The result is a product that bridges nostalgia and innovation.
The brand has attracted attention from homeowners, interior designers, and real estate professionals. Realtors, in particular, have embraced personalized brass door knockers as memorable closing gifts, offering something more thoughtful than the typical bottle of wine. Designers appreciate the ability to specify unique hardware that adds personality to entryways.

Gift-givers are another key audience. The Essential Set works as a standalone present for housewarmings, holidays, or birthdays, while additional knocker tops can be given over time—creating an ongoing tradition rather than a one-time gesture.
What’s Next
Over the next few years, Nifty Knockers plans to expand its design library and pursue retail partnerships with boutique home décor and hardware shops. There’s also potential to extend the interchangeable concept into other product categories, though the focus remains on building a loyal community of collectors.
For now, the brand occupies a space it essentially created: customizable entryway hardware that’s equal parts function, art, and self-expression. In a market filled with static options, that’s a rare thing.
