That makeup routine you’ve been using for years might not be doing your beautiful, mature skin any favors. As we age, our skin changes — becoming drier, developing fine lines, and losing some of that youthful volume. But don’t worry! The right products and techniques can enhance your natural beauty and give you that gorgeous glow.
“Our skin changes as we age, and new concerns can pop up as our features change,” explains makeup artist Ashley Rebecca. “It’s good to cater to who you are in the present moment when it comes to makeup.”
Foundation That Flatters
Finding the right foundation is crucial for mature skin. The golden rule? Less is more!
Celebrity makeup artist Sofia Schwarzkopf-Tilbury advises applying foundation only where needed. “With mature skin, you don’t want product to sit in fine lines, so it’s all about building up your foundation in sheer layers to achieve your desired coverage,” she says.
Look for hydrating, lightweight formulas with skin-loving ingredients. Foundations containing hyaluronic acid and vitamin E work wonders to nourish your skin while providing coverage.
When applying, try using a damp makeup sponge rather than a brush. This technique helps sheer out the product slightly, delivering a more natural-looking, skin-like finish that won’t accentuate fine lines.
Eye-Enhancing Secrets
Want to make those beautiful eyes pop? It’s all about technique and choosing the right products.
For eyeshadow, steer clear of heavy, matte formulas that can settle into creases. Instead, opt for cream shadows that glide on smoothly. Apply eyeshadow from side to side on the lid like a windshield wiper, extending slightly past the eyelid and into the crease.
“For example, if you have hooded eyes, lift your chin up and look down into your mirror so you can see your full eyelid,” Schwarzkopf-Tilbury suggests. “This technique will help you apply eyeshadow with precision without smudging.”
When it comes to eyeliner, swap harsh black for softer browns or plums. “I avoid using black on mature skin and opt for softer neutrals like brown or espresso pigments,” shares Alex McCormick, Director of Global Artistry at Hourglass Cosmetics.
For a lifting effect, focus your liner on the upper lash line, drawing slightly up and out at the corners. Skip lining the entire bottom lash line for a more youthful appearance.
Blush and Bronzer for Radiance
Nothing brings life to your face quite like the perfect blush. Cream formulas are ideal for mature skin as they blend seamlessly without settling into fine lines.
“I like to use cream and liquid complexion products as they melt into the skin and look more realistic,” says Schwarzkopf-Tilbury. For a natural flush, dot blush in a W-shape across your nose and cheeks, or apply to the apples of your cheeks and blend upward for a subtle lifting effect.
When it comes to bronzer, seek out products with a subtle glow rather than heavy shimmer or flat matte finishes. Apply in a number “3” shape — starting at the forehead, sweeping under the cheekbones, and finishing along the jawline.
Lip Love
Don’t be afraid to go bold with your lip color! “More mature women can totally pull off a bold red lip and look amazing,” encourages Rebecca. The key is choosing formulas with hydrating ingredients, as lips tend to become drier with age.
Before applying color, gently exfoliate your lips and define the edges with a lip liner to prevent color bleeding. Formulas containing hyaluronic acid or fruit extracts will keep your pout plump and moisturized throughout the day.
Remember, makeup should enhance your natural beauty, not mask it. With these age-defying techniques and the right products, you’ll be putting your best face forward every day.
