When Elissa Underwood Helling couldn’t find pajamas soft enough for her three boys’ sensitive skin, she did what many frustrated parents dream about: she created her own solution. What started as a quest for breathable, eczema-friendly sleepwear has grown into The Uptown Baby, a brand that surpassed $1 million in annual sales and now sits on the shelves of more than 175 boutiques nationwide.
The story begins with a common parenting struggle. Helling’s sons had eczema-prone skin that reacted to most conventional sleepwear. She wanted something exceptionally soft but couldn’t find options that didn’t sacrifice timeless style for function. So she built a line of luxury bamboo sleepwear that combined both: classic designs with antimicrobial, ultra-breathable fabric gentle enough for delicate skin.
From Factory Floors to Nationwide Distribution
Most fashion entrepreneurs design from afar, but Helling and her business partner Stephanie Smith took a different approach. The two friends traveled to China to trace their product’s entire journey—from fabric sourcing to manufacturing to final delivery. They walked factory floors, studied production processes, and ensured quality control at every stage. It’s the kind of hands-on diligence that’s rare in the boutique space but critical for parents whose children’s comfort depends on every stitch.

Within six months of launching, the response was overwhelming. The brand expanded into wholesale, and Smith officially joined as co-owner to manage wholesale operations and ordering. Today, their bamboo children’s sleepwear and accessories consistently sell out, fueling both customer loyalty and repeat purchases.
Sleep as a Core Value
Between them, Helling and Smith have five children—with another on the way for the Hellings. All of them sleep in Uptown Baby products nightly. That authenticity runs through everything the brand does. “Sleep is priceless” isn’t just a tagline; it’s the philosophy behind every design decision.

The brand occupies an interesting niche in children’s apparel. While many bamboo sleepwear companies lean into bright prints and playful patterns, The Uptown Baby embraces a more refined, heirloom-inspired aesthetic. It’s premium fabric technology wrapped in Southern classic style—a combination that resonates with millennial and Gen Z moms who value quality over quantity, as well as grandmothers shopping for elevated gifts.
Looking ahead, the founders have ambitious plans. They’re aiming to grow their retail footprint to 500 stores, and continue to bring more luxury bamboo products to market. Beyond pajamas, they’re building what they call a “sleep ecosystem”—think luxury crib sheets, matching robes for moms, and an expanding plush line. The goal is to become America’s go-to luxury sleep brand for children, grounded in thoughtful design and trusted by families navigating the challenges of sensitive skin and quality sleep routines.
For now, the brand continues to grow on a foundation of real need, meticulous craftsmanship, and the kind of credibility that only comes from living what you sell.
