Cassandra Watts Houston kept seeing the same pattern. Talented professionals were promoted because they were technically strong, but they were not always given the tools to effectively lead people. They struggled with communication, confidence, emotional intelligence, accountability, difficult conversations, decision-making, and understanding their own leadership identity. Organizations invested in one-time leadership trainings that created excitement in the moment but did not always provide the continued development, application, and accountability necessary for lasting behavioral change.
That gap became the foundation for Evolve Leadership and Development, LLC, a leadership and professional development company based in Sacramento, CA. Founded by Houston, an HR executive, leadership strategist, and author, Evolve helps organizations, professionals, emerging leaders, and youth strengthen the confidence, self-awareness, communication, emotional intelligence, and practical leadership skills needed to lead with purpose and create meaningful impact.

Evolve serves businesses, nonprofit and community organizations, educational institutions, professional associations, and individuals seeking meaningful leadership growth. Its programs support emerging and experienced leaders, managers, executives, professionals, youth, and young adults through leadership training and coaching, assessments, workshops, mentorship, keynote speaking, and structured development experiences designed to strengthen confidence, communication, self-awareness, influence, and leadership effectiveness.
What makes Evolve different begins with how Houston defines leadership development. “Meaningful leadership growth does not happen because someone attends a workshop, receives a certificate, and returns to work the next day,” she said. “Development requires time, practice, accountability, reflection, application, feedback, and organizational support.”
That is why Evolve is being built around a longer-term leadership growth model. Rather than limiting its work to one-time training, the company partners with organizations through structured three-month, six-month, and year-long development experiences. The goal is for organizations to make a commitment to developing their people while participants make a commitment to applying what they are learning.
Participants do not simply consume content. They assess where they are, identify development priorities, establish goals, complete real-world leadership activities, apply new behaviors in the workplace, document evidence of growth, receive feedback, and measure their development over time. This allows leadership development to become a journey rather than an event.
Houston brings more than 20 years of hands-on HR and leadership experience across very different environments, including manufacturing, healthcare, nonprofit organizations, education, and workforce development. She understands leadership from both sides of the table: the organizational challenges executives and HR leaders are trying to solve and the human challenges employees and managers experience while trying to lead effectively.
Evolve also focuses on developing the whole leader. Its approach addresses areas such as self-awareness and authenticity, purpose and leadership identity, emotional intelligence, communication and courageous conversations, strategic thinking and decision-making, influence and relationships, accountability and results, and developing others.
“Ultimately, I want organizations to be able to answer more than, ‘Did our employees attend leadership training?'” Houston said. “I want them to be able to answer: ‘How did our leaders grow, what are they doing differently, and how is that growth showing up in the organization?’ That is the kind of leadership development Evolve is being built to deliver.”
One of Houston’s greatest milestones is turning more than 20 years of HR and leadership experience into a leadership-development company and a structured system that can serve individuals and organizations at different stages of their leadership journey. She is an international best-selling author of “Leading From Within: Leading With a Purpose” and the author of “The Power of Becoming: Stop Asking If You Belong, Move Like You Do, Speak Like You Know Who You Are.” She also contributed to the Black Successful Women anthology “She Found the Power in the Climb.”
Her work as an author has allowed her to take the lessons she has learned throughout her career and translate them into messages and tools that help others develop confidence, purpose, authenticity, and leadership presence. She has spoken, facilitated workshops, mentored professionals, and shared her leadership message through podcasts, television, media, conferences, businesses, and community organizations. One particularly meaningful experience was speaking to more than 1,000 students at a SkillsUSA conference about career choices and their futures.
Another major milestone has been developing Evolve beyond traditional workshops and speaking engagements. Houston has created the foundation for a comprehensive Leading From Within leadership-development system, including leadership assessments, personalized development profiles, structured growth programs, real-world application, coaching, progress measurement, and a Leadership Growth Passport designed to document a participant’s development journey.
“I started Evolve after spending more than two decades working in Human Resources and leadership across industries including manufacturing, healthcare, nonprofit, education, and workforce development,” Houston said. “Throughout my career, I began to recognize a consistent gap in leadership: people were often promoted because they were technically strong at their jobs, but they were not always given the tools to effectively lead people. That gap became the foundation for Evolve.”
“Transformation does not always look like progress. Sometimes it looks like pause. Sometimes it looks like confusion. Sometimes it looks like nothing at all. But what you cannot see does not mean nothing is happening. It means something is forming.”

Houston’s philosophy is simple: leadership begins from within. When people understand themselves, their purpose, their strengths, and the impact they have on others, they can become more intentional and effective leaders. Evolve was created to help close the gap between having a leadership title and actually being prepared to lead. Its mission is reflected in its commitment to Empowering Leaders. Elevating Impact. Evolving Futures.
