A team of hospitality professionals has launched an initiative to address a growing concern in their industry – the mental wellbeing of those who work in restaurants, bars, and hotels across New England.
Serving Up Support: Maine, founded by industry veterans Nio DiPietrantonio, Garrett Kennedy, and Mary Foreman, focuses on breaking down stigma surrounding mental health in an occupation known for its demanding nature and high-pressure environment.
The nonprofit connects hospitality workers with essential mental health resources, financial counseling services, and crisis intervention support through their comprehensive resource hub.
“We are a passionate team of hospitality professionals, mental health advocates, and community leaders who believe in fostering empathy, active listening, and collaboration,” explains DiPietrantonio. “Our organization operates with honesty, integrity, and authenticity, ensuring that hospitality workers feel seen, heard, and supported.”
Beyond providing resources, the organization delivers training programs covering mental health first aid, resilience building, trauma-informed care, and substance use awareness – addressing challenges that have long affected workers in the food service and hospitality sectors.
Their specialized support extends to programs specifically designed for LGBTQ+ workers, seasonal and rural staff, and role-specific stress management – recognizing the diverse needs within the industry.
Looking ahead, the nonprofit plans to launch new wellness initiatives, expand their digital presence, and pilot in-person support groups by the end of 2025. Their ambitions extend to national expansion, advanced training programs, and advocacy for policy changes to improve working conditions industry-wide.
Serving Up Support: Maine is actively building partnerships with established organizations including The Burnt Chef Project and Culinary Hospitality Outreach Wellness (CHOW), creating a network of support for an industry that forms the backbone of community life.
“By collaborating with like-minded organizations and businesses, we can ensure that these workers have access to the resources and support they need to thrive and to keep our industry thriving,” notes Foreman.
Industry experts have increasingly recognized the toll that hospitality work can take on mental health, with irregular hours, high-stress environments, and customer-facing pressure contributing to burnout and related challenges. Through their comprehensive programs, Serving Up Support: Maine aims to transform the industry’s approach to worker wellbeing.
