In a Calgary workshop, excess cardboard boxes and bubble mailers destined for recycling bins are getting a second life. Eco Haven, a woman-led home and personal care brand, has built its business model around a simple premise: the most sustainable packaging is the kind that already exists.
Operating right out of Calgary, Eco Haven is Akanksha’s response to a major gap in the market. She started the brand after noticing a frustrating pattern where eco-friendly products either didn’t work well or forced people to completely change their daily habits just to be sustainable. “Many eco friendly products either sacrifice performance, feel overly niche, or require people to drastically change their habits,” she explains. The brand’s approach centers on biodegradable kitchen and personal care products designed to integrate into existing routines without compromise on quality or aesthetics.
Rethinking the Fulfillment Footprint
What really sets Eco Haven apart is how the business actually runs. Instead of ordering fresh shipping supplies, Akanksha gathers clean mailers and cardboard directly from the local community to give them a second life. This local waste reduction initiative tackles a problem often overlooked by brands focused solely on product sustainability: the environmental cost of fulfillment.

The shop is stocked with things people actually need, like sisal brushes and sponges made from plants, which are designed to be even more durable than the synthetic versions found at big box stores. These aren’t aesthetic swaps or novelty items, but functional replacements for high-turnover plastic products that people already buy regularly. Each item is selected to perform as well as or better than conventional alternatives while reducing reliance on single-use materials.
Designing for Everyday, Physical Use
Akanksha sees Eco Haven as a way to stay grounded as the world becomes more digital. “In a world increasingly driven by automation and energy intensive technologies, this is my tangible contribution toward balance,” she says. The focus remains on products people touch and use daily, with long shelf lives and minimal waste built into both design and distribution.

Operating independently, Akanksha manages product sourcing, packaging strategy, pricing, and market entry while maintaining transparency at every stage. She is building this for people who care about the planet but still need things to be easy, like busy professionals and families who want better options that don’t complicate their lives.
Bringing Sustainability Into Everyday Retail
Eco Haven’s near-term plans include expansion into select retail spaces that align with its values, moving sustainable home essentials into everyday shopping environments. The brand also aims to deepen community involvement in waste reduction efforts and build relationships with like-minded small businesses.
Akanksha wants to prove that a small business built on genuine values can actually go head to head with big mainstream brands when it comes to quality and convenience. As more people start to question the environmental cost of what they buy, Akanksha is proving that sustainability doesn’t have to be a grand, abstract concept. Through Eco Haven, she’s showing that real change can start with something as simple as the sponge in your kitchen sink or the box on your doorstep.
